"With these words, the readers is ushered into an isolated gray stone mansion on the windswept Cornish coast, as the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter recalls the chilling events that transpired as she began her new life as the young bride of a husband she barely knew. For in every corner of every room were phantoms of a time dead but not forgotten-- a past devotedly preserved by the sinister housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers: a suite immaculate and untouched, clothing laid out and ready to be worn, but not by any of the great house's current occupants. With an eerie presentiment of evil tightening her heart, the second Mrs. de Winter walked in the shadow of her mysterious predecessor, determined to uncover the darkest secrets and shattering truths about Maxim's first wife--the late and hauntingly beautiful Rebecca."
I'll admit, I felt a little conceited reading a book titled after my first name, but that initial curiosity was what compelled me to read the book in the first place (plus it's on the list of books to read for college-bound students). I'm glad I did, too.
At first, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book or not, as I haven't read many books in this genre as they didn't seem to capture my interest, but I was going to give it a shot. As I started getting further and further along into the novel, I couldn't put it down. Du Maurier has such a classic and descriptive way of writing that I miss so much in current authors today. I was immediately pulled in by the main character and plot, and it only took me a couple days to read Rebecca.
This novel is full of twists and surprises that just keep you turning the pages. Even the ending completely surprised me. I'm thinking, la la la, I know what's going to happen and BOOM. Well, wasn't expecting that, was I? I can't say I liked it, but I think it closed off the book decently.
I rated this 5/5 stars because it's a great book just all around. It has a full plot and it keeps you hanging, not wanting to put the book down. The end of the book ties off nicely, yet still leaves you wanting more. I feel like the main character is fully-developed and there aren't any awkward points in the book where I couldn't imagine her saying or doing something.
I would recommend this book to anyone of high school age as anyone younger may find it hard to read. This book does not contain any mature content.
